I’ve been where you are – eager to play but wincing at the price tags on quality gear. You see, my journey started on the ice of my neighborhood rink. From there I played city league hockey in High School and then played for my college’s hockey team. Those days were thrilling, full of hard-fought matches and camaraderie, but they also opened my eyes to the financial hurdles that so many players face. It struck me that the love of the game shouldn’t be dulled by the stress of affording equipment.
That’s part of the reason I created Hockey Haven Hub. What you’re going to find here isn’t just a selection of equipment; it’s a curated collection of quality gear that either won’t break the bank if you’re on a budget, or on the other hand, can indulge that desire to splurge on that piece of equipment you’ve had your eyes on, just like my first pair of Super Tacks skates. My Journey: From a Frozen Pond to Starting Hockey Haven Hub
I grew up in Minnesota and learned to skate on a frozen pond by our home. As kids, we learned the basics of playing hockey setting up makeshift goalies on the ice. Once we had built up enough confidence, we ventured over to the outdoor hockey rink where we got to play with the big kids. Here we would be able to play with players anywhere from our age to high school, college and adults that still enjoyed the game. It was such a fun time where everyone was accepted and contributed to the best of their ability, no matter their skill level.
My path to founding Hockey Haven Hub began when I thought back upon the glossy ice rink my college hockey team used to play on in Spokane, Washington. We played American teams from Spokane, Seattle and Anchorage, as well as Canadian teams from Trail, Kamloops and Vancouver. Back then, strapping on my skates and hitting the ice wasn’t just an activity; it was an integral part of who I was. The rush of the game, the sound of the puck sliding across the ice, and the feeling of camaraderie with my teammates are memories I cherish.
When I think back about the time I played hockey in college, it brought forth a realization that the sport has become almost prohibitively expensive for today’s players. Even back then I had to balance my living expenses against the cost of keeping my gear up to date. I started out with a basic pair of CCM hockey skates and eventually upgraded to a pair of Super Tacks that I’d saved up for from a previous summer job. They were a lot of money for me back then, but they helped improve my skating ability and I was able to get many years use out of them which helped justify the cost.
This wasn’t just a personal challenge; it was a widespread issue that called for a solution. I dreamed of a place where every player could access the best possible equipment without the burden of exorbitant prices. That dream took shape as Hockey Haven Hub, a resource I wish existed during my college days.
Now what is Hockey Haven Hub exactly? It’s where I’ve poured all my expertise and passion to help fellow enthusiasts. My college experience taught me about more than just slapshots and power plays; it enlightened me on what players truly need – quality, affordability, and sincere support.

Beyond the Ice: Get to Know Brooks
Off the rink, my life isn’t all hockey jerseys and morning skates. You’ll often find me engaging in activities that, at first glance, might seem worlds away from the slapshot and the scramble for the puck. But each interest, each hobby, tells more of the story – the story of who I am, both in the crease and in the community.
After college, I continued to play team and pick up hockey on the side while pursuing a career in accounting and finance, all the while participating in multiple community organizations throughout the years. I’ve served as coach for our two boys youth hockey team, ensuring the next generation can enjoy the game as much as I have. Seeing kids light up when they score their first goal, or when they master a new skill – that’s the real win for me. I also enjoy playing golf with friends and flying glider planes over the Sierra Estrella Mountains when I get the opportunity.
I am recently retired and built this website to be an advocate not just for affordable gear, but also for the spirit of the sport.
